Denmark’s largest inland port, Port of Aalborg, has completed the second and final stage of the new railway terminal in the East Port, and these weeks have seen the first freight carriages unloaded and loaded in the new area.
Rail is playing an increasingly important role in the transport mix of companies in North Jutland, and at Port of Aalborg, Denmark’s largest inland port, this positive development is expected to gather momentum in the coming years.
Consequently, Port of Aalborg is continuously investing in rail infrastructure at the fast-growing industrial area in Aalborg East, and in the spring of 2020 the company commenced the establishment of a brand-new rail facility comprising 43,000 square metres. A site, which now stands ready for use to the delight of Commercial Manager at Port of Aalborg, Rasmus Munk Kolind.
– We commissioned the first section of the new area in August, and now we have completed the second and final section, which is really positive. Demand for the transport of goods by rail has been growing rapidly in recent years and companies in North Jutland seriously view rail as an alternative to road transport. In 2020 alone, the number of freight carriages rose by 54 percent and we are therefore very pleased that we have now increased our capacity in this sector significantly, enabling us to continue supporting this positive development, says Rasmus Munk Kolind.
The new rail area, which is located on the south-east of the East Port, includes a 9,100 square-metre terminal area with a 430-metre-long grooved rail track and part of a 12,500 m2 covered area. There is also a further 21,200 m2 area for establishing companies.
– Along with a growing demand for freight transport by rail, we are also increasingly attracting new companies to our business park. The new terminal site now affords us even better opportunities to offer tailored solutions to both new and existing companies at the port, whether it concerns the establishment or leasing of properties at a location that affords them direct access from their backyard to 4,000 European railway hubs, says Rasmus Munk Kolind.
Already now, the renovation company Geminor has established in the new area, to include the erection of a large tent hall.
– We are pleased to have concluded an agreement with Geminor and look forward to cooperating with them. Furthermore, we have noticed a strong demand for the new square metres, and we therefore expect to attract more companies to the area in the near future, says Rasmus Munk Kolind.
