Sustainability

Aalborg is a smart city that strives to be at the forefront of development. The same also applies to sustainability. We are happy to take the lead and the initiative for various sustainable development projects along with numerous other North Jutland partners.

Stronghold for green transition

A number of strategic networks and partnerships across governments, organisations, knowledge institutions and companies are working together on a broad range of green development projects within sustainable solutions and business models.

The common purpose is to contribute to Aalborg Municipality’s business development strategy “Aalborg catches the future” where, among other things, green security of supply is one of the focus areas in supporting and attracting businesses working with green transition.

Green business models are central to Network for Sustainable Business Development North Denmark and Business Network 9220. Business Network 9220 is a strategic partnership between nearly 200 companies in Aalborg East and is behind major EU supported development projects such as Environment++ and Industrial Symbiosis North.

The aim is quite simple: we wish to reduce environmental impacts while advancing the positive economic benefits of green initiatives.

Gate to green for businesses

Port of Aalborg is a green production, knowledge and test hub, predicated upon making processes greener – both in our own company and the companies in our business park. We achieve this by entering into partnerships, facilitating corporate symbiosis, developing sustainable business models, attracting green energy companies, minimising resource waste, optimising energy consumption, supporting our customers’ climate agenda and much more. We are also ready to be your gate to green.

Path to a sustainable business park

Net zero is a key focal point for the business park at Port of Aalborg, where determined, ambitious and visionary efforts are ongoing to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases, compensating both production and the value chain. Some of the companies in the area are already well on their way, while others have just begun, but the common will of all is to take the lead and climate action together with Aalborg and the rest of the world – both individually and collectively.

CO2 storage as a climate tool

It has been politically decided that carbon capture and storage – also known as CCS – is an important tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, it’s not enough to replace fossil fuels, convert the car fleet, save energy or install more wind turbines and solar panels to reach the Paris Agreement goals. We also need to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, and underground storage is a powerful solution.

The Danish subsoil is particularly well suited to storing and encapsulate large amounts due to a thick layer of sandstone, and it is estimated that this could lead to reductions in Denmark totalling 3.2 million tonnes by 2030.

Green Hub Denmark

Green Hub Denmark is a public-private partnership, which bridges the gap between businesses, researchers and authorities to create a strong platform for green growth. Focused on innovation, sustainable business models as well as testing and demonstration, solutions are invented to mitigate the global climate challenges. The project’s aim to contribute to the government’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 70 percent, as well as attracting more investment and creating green jobs in the entire region.

GreenCem

The GreenCem project is designed to investigate the possibilities of carbon capture at Aalborg Portland cement plant and integrate this carbon into a CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage) value chain in the Aalborg region. Port of Aalborg is participating as a project partner to investigate and support the business opportunities in the value chain. Both for CCS, which entails storing CO2 in the ground, and CCU, whereby CO2 is employed in the production of the sustainable fuel eMethanol.

Aalborg Renewables

Aalborg is an internationally acknowledged stronghold for players within renewable energy. The network Aalborg Renewables supports this by gathering groundbreaking companies and leading research institutions in the field. The mission is to strengthen the industry and accelerating both growth and innovation by cooperating on developing and commercialising new ideas.

Aalborg Maritime & Logistics

Aalborg Maritime & Logistics is a strong business network for local companies, research institutions and other players focused on the maritime and logistics industry. The network’s aim is to foster relations and strengthen competences between the members through sparring and knowledge sharing.

SPIES

The project SPIES (Shore Power In European Shipping) aims to enhance the utilization of shore power in European inland shipping by proposing a policy recommendation plan to key stakeholders in inland waterway transport, ensuring improved and open access to shore power for European skippers within and beyond the North Sea region. Port of Aalborg is part of the projectconsortium, liaising with local stakeholders in Denmark, Norway and Sweden under the leadership of Provinciale Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij Limburg.

Industrial Symbiosis North

The website Industrielsymbiosenord.com shows the result of the EU-funded project: GRØN (Green Ecosystems North Jutland). During the 2-year project period, GRØN helped SMEs in North Jutland to collaborate on saving resources through symbioses. A wide range of partners and supporters stands behind the project and all the successes.

AEGIS

Aalborg is acting as a test platform in a large-scale research project AEGIS (Advanced, Efficient and Green Intermodal Systems) under Horizon 2020 – the EU’ s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation – aimed at developing a new concept for short sea shipping in Europe as an alternative to road haulage. The project is fully funded with DKK 58 million and involves 12 parties from Denmark and abroad, including Port of Aalborg and Aalborg University.
