The East Port in Aalborg is bustling with innovative activities. In recent years, Port of Aalborg has been at the centre of a wave of national and international development projects, where green solutions are being demonstrated in close collaboration with businesses, research institutions, and authorities.
Port of Aalborg has, for years, worked purposefully to support the green transition. That work is gaining significant momentum, not least thanks to financial funding for a wide range of development projects in which Port of Aalborg serves as a case and test platform.
For Port of Aalborg, participating in these development projects is a strategic priority, aiming both at strengthening the port’s own business and contributing to society’s green transformation.
– We are not just a port. We are also an active player in the green transition, proactively involved in the development of new technologies and solutions that can drive both ourselves and our partners forward. That is why it is a major priority for us to contribute to projects that can generate new knowledge, new business opportunities, and new collaborations, says Palle Skyum, Senior Consultant at Port of Aalborg’s subsidiary, Port of Aalborg Research & Development.
Diverse projects – one shared ambition
Port of Aalborg is currently participating in eight major development projects, ranging from circular economy, energy communities, and soil recycling to digital streamlining of maritime traffic and infrastructure for shore power.
These projects are funded through both Danish and European programmes and are carried out in close cooperation with research institutions, international ports, businesses, and public authorities.
– Aalborg holds a unique position with a distinctive interaction between the port, knowledge environments, and authorities. Here, there is access to both a business park and port operations, a strong research environment with Aalborg University, close relations with the authorities, and a wide range of partners open to trying new approaches. This makes it possible to demonstrate and scale solutions using real-world data, explains Palle Skyum.
A common feature of the projects Port of Aalborg is involved in is that they are based on specific challenges and ambitions within the port’s own business – but at the same time have the potential to be scaled up.
– We believe that green development must be commercially sustainable. Therefore, we prioritise projects that create value for both society and for the business park or port operations in our activities. It is about development aiming to create new solutions that can be scaled and applied in practice, concludes Palle Skyum.
