Rapidly rising demand for storage capacity near the quay and growth in project goods means that Port of Aalborg is now undertaking a quay expansion at the East Port.
For the first time in more than 30 years, Port of Aalborg is expanding its quay capacity. Consequently, the country’s largest inland port will soon be tendering a major construction project, entailing a 100-metre quay extension and the establishment of an associated 27,800 m2 terminal area.
Moreover, Commercial Manager at Port of Aalborg, Michael Rosenkilde Lind, is confident that the new square metres will be needed:
– For a long time, we have been experiencing rapidly growing demand for quayside spaces from companies with both short- and long-term storage requirements and see no signs of this interest abating, he says and continues:
– On the contrary, we expect growing demand from both North Jutland companies and project customers to continue. Therefore, it is crucial that we expand our quay services, so that we can also offer the business community optimal conditions for their logistics chains in the future.
Already in 2017, Port of Aalborg responded to the growing demand by establishing a brand-new multi-terminal, which has since been expanded to its current storage capacity of approximately 33,000 m2.
The new quay area is situated as an extension of an almost 90,000 m2 storage space, which is currently leased to Siemens Gamesa. This increases the quay storage capacity at the port as a result of the expansion by almost 120,000 m2.
– It is nearly four times the size of our multi-terminal, which illustrates the magnitude of the new quay area as a highly significant expansion of our quay capacity. Like the multi-terminal, the new quay area will be integrated with our railway infrastructure, affording companies the opportunity to easily and cost-effectively switch between modes of transport, explains Michael Rosenkilde Lind.
To future-proof the quay, the water depth is dimensioned to 10 metres, while the construction work also involves 200 metres of coastal protection. Moreover, Port of Aalborg is prioritising optimal environmental friendliness with a strong emphasis on materials and resource effectivity in the construction work.
The construction phase itself is expected to start in August, and the new quay area is expected to come into service on 1 March 2022.
