The progress and development of Aalborg and the Port of Aalborg have been closely intertwined ever since King Christian I granted Aalborg royal trading privileges as a port in 1476, and this remains the case today. The eastern port area, located approximately 10 kilometres east of Aalborg city centre, is now the primary hub of the port’s activities and home to a wide range of large and small companies.
Over the past years, Port of Aalborg has continuously expanded and invested in its facilities at the eastern harbour, adding new land areas, quays and other business infrastructure. A few years ago, the port also took over operations of the area’s container terminal.
Now the time has come for Port of Aalborg to strengthen its own physical framework at the port, says CEO Kristian Thulesen Dahl, who has recently brought all employees together in one location.
– We have evolved continuously throughout our 550-year history, and particularly over the past 10-15 years, significant changes have taken place. We are – and have always been – a traditional transport hub with a strong focus on cargo. Over time, however, we have added new dimensions. Today, we are a full-service inland port that supports and creates optimal conditions for companies in our business park – both waterside and landside. This means not only servicing companies in their daily operations with logistics, cargo handling and port services – all of which are part of our DNA – but also supporting their overall growth conditions from a broader, business-strategic perspective, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl.
This development is clearly visible across the port area, which, in addition to offering strong logistics capabilities and infrastructure, is home to one of the fastest-growing commercial areas in the region. And growth continues:
– We have recently been selected to host a state-designated industrial park. We are proud of this, as it confirms that we are on the right track, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, who sees the new headquarters as a prerequisite for continued growth.
– Naturally, our development has also meant that we as an organisation have grown over the years with new competencies and departments. Over time, this growth led to us being spread across several locations. Now, we have once again gathered our office, warehouse and cargo handling under one roof – in a location that is ideally positioned in relation to our cargo operations. We are confident that this will create strong synergies to the benefit of our customers.”
Specifically, Port of Aalborg has moved into the former Royal Arctic Line building at Vejdybet 16, providing access to nearly 3,000 square metres of office space and 5,300 square metres of warehouse facilities. The subsidiary Aalborg Stevedore Company will occupy the warehouse facilities to further strengthen the operational framework around the container terminal.
– The development of our container terminal continues, and with the new facilities we are now able, for example, to operate a high-bay warehouse in close proximity to the terminal. This enables us to offer even stronger and more efficient logistics solutions, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl.
Port of Aalborg has just moved into the new premises, and citizens can look forward to being invited to explore both the new facilities and the port more broadly later this year as part of the anniversary celebrations.
– We will celebrate our 550th anniversary throughout the year and invite the city inside – both literally and symbolically. We will share much more about this soon, and we truly look forward to what we hope will be a memorable year, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl.
