Port of Aalborg is on a mission to make everyday life greener. As part of the port’s strategy, the majority of the machinery has been converted to electricity. This has contributed to more sustainable port operations that meet customers’ needs for greener cargo handling.
The green transition is materializing at Port of Aalborg. In recent months, the port has converted virtually all machinery to electric power.
The conversion to electricity has been made possible in collaboration with ProTruck, which has been responsible for the container terminal’s workshop and the large fleet of machinery at Port of Aalborg since 2023.
– With a busy container terminal and business park, our equipment is an important part of daily operations. It is therefore a big step in the right direction that we are now electrifying the majority of our equipment. In this way, we do not only support the green transition, but also help create it ourselves, says Director of Operation at Port of Aalborg, Søren Bæk Christensen.
Greener and more competitive port operations
It is part of Port of Aalborg’s strategic approach that results within the green transition must be realized through, among other things, investments in infrastructure. Thus, electrification is part of Port of Aalborg’s ambitious sustainability strategy, which aims for climate neutrality.
– In recent years, we have made several investments to optimize port operations. The new electrification significantly reduces our carbon footprint without compromising on reliability or quality. The few machines that for various reasons cannot yet run on electricity can be converted to fuel-efficient alternatives such as HVO biofuel or ECO engines with a factory-guaranteed 30% saving on diesel consumption, says Søren Bæk Christensen.
In addition to making a positive impact on the carbon footprint, electrification is also done in order to offer a competitive terminal.
– We are experiencing ever-increasing demands from suppliers and subcontractors who, like ourselves, must meet a number of climate requirements. So, the transition to electricity is also about continuing to offer competitive facilities for our customers and potential customers, says Søren Bæk Christensen.
Port of Aalborg is also working on establishing a shore power system at the East Port to supply both ships and the port’s latest investment – a 500-ton mobile crane – with electricity.
