We wish to be a transparent and responsible company
Port of Aalborg is introducing green power as another opportunity for the port’s tenants. The aim is to help companies in the business park become even greener in their operations.
In the future, it will be easier for companies in the port area to positively impact their carbon footprint without significantly changing their operations. As of today, Port of Aalborg only buys green electricity, which means that the companies in the business park that are connected to the port’s own meters will benefit from the new scheme.
“We do this because our primary task as a landlord is to create the best possible framework for the companies in our business park. This not only includes tailor-made buildings, strong infrastructure and good logistics solutions. It also includes creating the right framework for companies to develop in a greener direction,” says Mette Schmidt, Chief Technical Sustainability Officer at Port of Aalborg.
Zero emissions
The Danish Energy Agency defines “green power” as energy from renewable sources, which in the Renewable Energy Directive includes wind power, solar energy, geothermal energy, ambient energy, tidal, wave and other forms of ocean energy, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, gas from wastewater treatment plants and biogas.
In continuation, the Danish Energy Agency has defined the emission of green electricity at 0 kg CO2 per kWh.
However, energy suppliers cannot just use the term “green power”. It must be documented with so-called guarantees of origin, issued and administered by Energinet and the Danish Energy Agency. A guarantee of origin is an electronic document whose function is to prove to consumers that a given amount of energy is produced from renewable energy sources.
Small additional cost with a big effect
For the tenants in Port of Aalborg’s business park, there will be an additional cost of 1.7 Danish Øre per kWh, but Mette Schmidt is convinced that the price is not crucial.
“It doesn’t just make a green difference in the world. It also has a positive impact on companies’ carbon footprint that many companies will soon have to deliver. This strengthens the competitiveness of each company.
Initially, the supply of green electricity only includes tenants at the port who Port of Aalborg bills, while tenants with their own meter manage their own electricity agreement.
“We would very much like to help companies that want to switch to green power to get an agreement in place,” concludes Mette Schmidt.
