The quay expansion comprises 500 metres of new quay and approximately 60,000 square metres of adjacent quay area. It will form a central part of the infrastructure behind North Jutland’s first large‑scale CO₂ reception facility and represents a significant enhancement of the port’s physical capacity. The expanded quay will increase capacity and make it possible for two CO₂ vessels to berth simultaneously.
The project has received support from the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), as it forms part of the CO₂ infrastructure initiative Norne Carbon Storage Hub, which has been designated an EU Project of Common Interest (PCI).
The new quay is expected to be completed in autumn 2027 and will constitute part of the physical foundation for a future CO₂ reception terminal and associated pipeline infrastructure.
“At a time when several green projects have faced challenges, we are now taking tangible, physical steps towards establishing North Jutland’s first CO₂ reception facility. The quay expansion is a strategic step for Port of Aalborg, strengthening our role as a commercial port while creating the physical framework for the CO₂ infrastructure that will eventually support permanent geological storage,” says Nuuradiin S. Hussein, Chair of the Board at Port of Aalborg, adding:
“This project connects directly to the emerging CCUS ecosystem in Aalborg – and with the initiatives already underway, you simply cannot say CCS without also saying Aalborg.”
The quay expansion also paves the way for enlarging the port’s quay‑adjacent business areas, which can be used by green industry and other space‑intensive activities. These new areas form part of the state‑designated Aalborg Industrial Park, aimed at companies within green production, energy technology and heavy industry, such as the wind sector.
“With the quay expansion, we are making a long‑term investment in the infrastructure needed to attract and develop green industry. In the wind sector, access to space and quay‑side areas is one of the biggest challenges both in Denmark and globally, as many ports are limited by urban locations. Aalborg stands out with its out‑of‑town setting and ample room to combine industrial production, energy technology and port infrastructure. There is no doubt that this expansion will strengthen our competitiveness and position as a newly designated state industrial park,” says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of Port of Aalborg.
Within the CO₂ sector, Port of Aalborg is collaborating with Norne Carbon Storage Hub to develop CO₂ infrastructure in Aalborg that will eventually be able to receive and handle captured CO₂ from Danish and European operators.
“Aalborg has unique prerequisites for becoming an important hub for land‑based CO₂ management. Our ambition is to develop solutions that can be scaled over time and support both national and European climate goals in close cooperation with the port and the industrial developments in the area,” says Lars Bo Christiansen, representative for Norne Carbon Storage Hub in Denmark.
Port of Aalborg and Norne Carbon Storage Hub also welcome dialogue with other actors working within CO₂ capture and utilisation, including Power‑to‑X activities and the production of green fuels.

About Norne Carbon Storage Hub
Norne Carbon Storage Hub is a CO₂ infrastructure project developed by Fidelis, focusing on the reception, transport and permanent storage of CO₂. The project works with land‑based solutions designed to meet the needs of Danish and European operators for safe and scalable CO₂ handling. Norne Carbon Storage Hub is designated as an EU Project of Common Interest (PCI) and is being developed in cooperation with ports, industrial partners and authorities to help achieve national and European climate goals.
About Aalborg Industrial Park
Aalborg Industrial Park covers 243 hectares of industrial land on both the north and south sides of the Limfjord, with the potential for expansion to a total of 497 hectares. Companies located in the park benefit from a dedicated “red carpet” fast‑track scheme providing quicker and more coordinated regulatory processing through a single point of contact. The aim is to make it easier and faster to establish or expand production in Denmark, thereby attracting investment and jobs. The industrial park is particularly intended to support green industries and technologies.
EU support for the quay expansion
The project is co‑financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), administered by the European Commission.
