Port of Aalborg Raises Expectations After a Strong First Half

Port of Aalborg achieved net revenue of DKK 139.6 million and a profit before tax of DKK 31.6 million in the first half of 2025. This is better than expected at the beginning of the financial year, and it pleases the Chairman of the Board of Port of Aalborg A/S, Bjarne Jensen:

– This reflects our ability to create favorable conditions for North Jutland companies, whether they need transport or wish to establish activities in our ever-growing business park at the port. At the same time, we have succeeded in reducing costs for dredging the harbour basin, which has also left a positive mark on the first half, says Bjarne Jensen.

The strong first half means that Port of Aalborg has raised its expectations for the year’s ordinary result before tax from DKK 40–45 million to DKK 45–50 million.

Stable Activity and New Opportunities at the port

Part of the explanation for the positive development is that activity at the port has remained at a high level in 2025. The number of vessel calls is on par with 2024, and total cargo volumes are even slightly higher, driven by increasing amounts of crushed aggregates, fodder, and solid biofuels, which have more than offset a decline in imports of, among other things, fossil fuels.

At the same time, Aalborg Container Terminal has maintained its activity since 2024, while the Port of Aalborg has seen growth in the leasing business.

– Although the first half has been characterised by global uncertainty, particularly due to U.S. trade policy, we have been busy in a good way. We have maintained a very high level of both vessel calls and cargo. Container traffic remains an important growth area for us, and we can see that in the first half we have expanded our customer base with several shipping lines, some of which focus on refrigerated and frozen containers, says Port of Aalborg CEO, Kristian Thulesen Dahl, and continues:

– One of the key reasons for the improved financial result is growth in the leasing business, even though we have actually experienced a slight decline in the leasing of storage facilities due to restructuring by a few larger customers. Growth is driven by demand for land sites, particularly in connection with our rail terminals and quays. Therefore, it is good news that we have now completed the first stage of a new so-called omni-terminal, which will give businesses even more opportunities for attractive land plots with us.

The first stage of the new omni-terminal comprises 14,500 square meters and is in such high demand that stage two is already underway. The terminal has a total potential of more than 50,000 square meters. The first half has also brought several positive developments in the business park, where new companies have joined, while existing ones have expanded their activities. This includes, for example, Kongsberg Maritime Denmark, which has expanded its lease in the business park, and the energy company Verdo, which has put into operation a new 13,000 square meter production and administration building, bringing together the group’s North Jutland activities.

Quay Expansion Paves the Way for CO2 Hub

In early summer, Port of Aalborg entered into a 30-year agreement with the company Norne for the establishment of a new CO2 reception facility at the East Port, which will make Aalborg one of Europe’s leading areas for CO2 handling. In this connection, a significant quay expansion will be initiated to pave the way for the reception facility. The expansion initially includes 500 meters of new quay and an associated new quay area of 60,000 square meters.

– The quay expansion is a key prerequisite for realising the CO2 reception facility, and at the same time, it allows us to expand the business park. Especially with companies in the wind industry, which we are already highly focused on serving with both attractive and tailored land plots and, not least, the shipment of many heavy elements, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl.

Port of Aalborg is also participating, together with the Municipality of Aalborg and Aalborg Utilities, in the effort to be designated as one of the state’s five upcoming industrial parks. The decision is expected this autumn, and such a designation would further strengthen Aalborg’s position as a growth driver for North Jutland and as a central hub in the green transition.
