When Port of Aalborg took over operations of the container terminal in 2023, it was with an ambition to create more value for regional companies who ship goods in and out of Aalborg. One year after, the local container business has succeeded in growing despite a challenging market.
After five decades of partnership with Royal Arctic Line, a new chapter began for the container traffic in Aalborg when Port of Aalborg took over the operation of Aalborg Container Terminal last year.
Now, the focus is on establishing a generator of growth for the North Jutland business community. Based on a locally rooted logistics setup, the container terminal will meet the needs of regional companies and ensure an international connection to the world via Aalborg.
– We look back on a year with positive development and great support from shipping companies, freight forwarders and businesses. Together with our partners, we have created a strong setup with better logistics solutions and more efficient cargo handling. This makes a difference for importers and exporters in the region, says Director of Operation at Port of Aalborg, Søren Bæk Christensen.
Increased container volumes in 2023
Globally, 2023 was a challenging year for the container market with geopolitical uncertainty, challenged supply chains and decreasing demand. However, this has not affected Aalborg Container Terminal, where the number of handled containers increased for the majority of the year.
– To great satisfaction, we increased container volumes through 2023 and the development seems to continue. Nu ser udviklingen ud til at fortsætte. In January this year, we handled one call that alone involved more containers than the whole of January last year, says Søren Bæk Christensen.
DSV welcomes positive development in Aalborg
Among the users of Aalborg Container Terminal is one of the world’s largest transportation companies, DSV. From its branch in Nørresundby, DSV serves companies in the North Jutland region with sea, road and air transportation.
– Over time, Aalborg Container Terminal has become a competitive terminal. From Aalborg, we can offer local companies access to the global transportation network, often resulting in savings in bottom-line figures and carbon emissions. In addition, thanks to a good collaboration with Port of Aalborg and the stevedores, we can offer storage facilities at the port area, explains Business Development Manager at DSV, Sune Foldberg.
Among others, DSV has been involved in securing that several major shipping companies now offer service from Aalborg.
– It is good news for the regional business community that there is plenty of activity at the container terminal in Aalborg. The positive development can ultimately help increase the number of calls and shipping companies, and this will benefit North Jutland companies because it increases competitiveness, concludes Sune Foldberg.
The 89,000 square meter container terminal in Aalborg offers weekly feeder routes to the container ports in Hamburg and Bremerhaven.
