Power-to-X

There is tremendous potential in the field of Power-to-X in Aalborg. Port of Aalborg is participating in collaboration with other companies and educational institutions in a number of small and large-scale Power-to-X projects aid the green transition of the transport sector through the production of the sustainable fuels of the future.

Aalborg University’s test facility

Aalborg University has moved its test and demonstration facility into the port area to accelerate and realise the large-scale production of future green fuels such as e-methanol and hydrogen. The aim is to give both researchers and commercial players the opportunity to test technologies for future energy systems and transition to real production faster.

Installation of the plant is in full swing and could potentially be expanded by up to four times its current size in the future.

Aviation fuel MeSAF

Under the project name MeSAF, a pilot plant is being established for the production of sustainable aviation fuel, which will potentially supply a domestic route in Denmark. The aim is to accelerate the development of a very promising technology that converts raw e-methanol into sustainable aviation fuel using a groundbreaking catalyst from the US company Vertimass.

The consortium behind the project comprises Aalborg Airport, European Energy, Aalborg University, Port of Aalborg and several other companies.

European Energy’s Power-to-X plant

European Energy has entered into a declaration of intent with the Port of Aalborg for the establishment of a large Power-to-X plant at the Port of Aalborg. The project includes an electrolysis plant with a capacity of 120 MW as well as an associated e-methanol plant

According to the plan, the plant will be able to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of e-methanol for the transport sector.
